As SHAVA, a pseudonym deeply rooted in the ancient aromatic meaning of unity, my artistic journey reflects the tapestry of my life and my passionate desire to connect the world. . . Growing up with eight sisters and witnessing my mother’s battle with severe depression coupled with childhood trauma gave me a deeper understanding of the unique struggles women face. This understanding deepened when my sister bravely embraced her lesbian identity as a teenager. My art is heavily influenced by my experiences, enhanced by my studies in seminary and my identity as a man of color. My work is a narrative woven from personal stories and broader social issues, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment and the LGBTQIA+ community. I use art as a tool to express unity, feelings, and ideas. By transforming everyday objects into powerful symbols of liberation thought, female empowerment, and LGBTQIA+ identity, my art not only serves as visual fodder but as a catalyst for acceptance and understanding. The female perspective is a central theme in my work. In seeking to highlight the experience, faith, strength, and beauty of women who are often obscured in the male-dominated narrative. My goal is to celebrate and build on their contributions, emphasizing the important role they play in our society. As SHAVA, my art is an ode to the resilience and grace of women. It stands as a tribute to those who have endured struggle, a voice for those often silenced, and a blanket of hope aimed at creating a more inclusive and empathetic world. Through my work, I want to connect with people, share stories of empowerment, and find unity and understanding of different experiences.
